Brookings Area Camp Adventure Director
CAMP PURPOSE
Brookings Area Camp Adventure offers two separate week-long summer sessions for children aged 6 to 21 with neurological or sensory impairments, communication disorders, mental illnesses, or physical disabilities. The camp ensures accessibility for most types of disabilities and provides dedicated one-on-one staff support if needed.
QUALIFICATIONS

Candidates should possess a background in special education, teaching, or early childhood education, along with prior experience working with children with disabilities.

Applicants must demonstrate both the ability and the commitment to support individuals with special needs.

Demonstrated capabilities in program development and management.

Willingness to undergo a background check (facilitated by Camp Adventure) is required prior to final contract approval by the board.
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
-
Must dedicate enough time to create a camp environment that is safe, enjoyable, and financially responsible.

Maintain Camp Adventure website.

Review applications and assess applicants’ eligibility and suitability for camp.

Remain available to all campers, considering their individual abilities.

Run at least two separate one-week camp sessions (contracts may be adjusted for shorter periods). Dates decided by director with input from Brookings Area Interagency Council.

Follow all financial guidelines required by grant restrictions and criteria.
-
Complete the Camp Adventure contract before 1 January every year.

Report directly to the Brookings Area Interagency Council.
-
Recruit, hire and train staff necessary for the two one-week camp sessions.
-
Serve as a constructive and encouraging role model for both campers and team members.
-
Keep track of work hours for grant tracking and future funding needs.
-
Attend Brookings Interagency Council meetings and keep the BIAC board informed on program activities.
-
Develop a budget and, when needed, submit extra grant requests tailored to camp or camper requirements.
-
Assist in creating brochures, promotional materials, evaluations, and other resources for BACA.
-
Develop programming for camp and work toward creating an advisory committee.
-
Protect the privacy of both campers and fellow staff members.
-
Complete all tasks listed on the “Close Camp” checklist.
CLOSE CAMP CHECKLIST

Submit all marked receipts for expenses and bills to the BIAC Treasurer by August 15th.

Turn in staff time sheets, W-9 forms, and signed contracts to the BIAC Treasurer no later than August 15th.

Prepare a director’s summary of Camp for the current year, including what was successful, what was not, and other detailed notes for future reference.

Gather all forms, paperwork, camper applications, and notes into a folder or binder, which should be stored for seven (7) years before being destroyed.

Ensure any grant-related information is organized and accessible for potential submissions.

Create a list of all businesses, volunteers, granting organizations, and other donors, including their addresses, for review. Attach any letters to the editor thanking these entities. The Camp Director must send a handwritten or typed thank-you note to all donors by August 31st, along with any additional thank-yous from campers.

Save camp photos digitally and print those featuring individual campers as keepsakes. Share photos on social media platforms like Facebook or the Camp Website as space allows.
